How to Make Graduation Day Special

Graduating is not something that everyone gets to do, so it’s a great opportunity to make sure the graduate feels truly celebrated for their hard work. From organising an event with their friends to giving them a gift, there are plenty of ways to make graduation day a truly memorable one.

The ceremony will usually begin with a short academic procession, during which the president or vice-chancellor of the university or college will walk onto the stage. After this the graduands will be invited to take their seats and the ceremony will start. Often the seating arrangements will be organised by course and class and staff will be on hand to help people find their seat if needed.

During the ceremony presentations will be made by members of staff and students, highlighting various achievements and presenting the most outstanding students with awards. These are an important part of the graduation and help to paint a picture of the achievements of the whole graduating class.

At the end of the ceremony a short speech from the president or another member of senior staff will be delivered and then each graduand will receive their diploma. This will usually involve walking across the stage to shake the president’s hand and receiving a cylinder or piece of paper that symbolises their degree certificate.

It is a good idea to limit picture-taking and video recording during the ceremony, especially during key moments such as when graduates are walking across the stage or receiving their diplomas. This will ensure that the whole event remains a special and memorable occasion for all those present.
