What is Neighborhood Alert?

Neighborhood alert is a community-based crime prevention program in which neighbors and local law enforcement work together. Members report suspicious activities, receive and monitor alarms and doorbells for their home or apartment complex, accept deliveries for vacationing neighbors, and keep an eye on their neighbors’ cars when they are out of town. Usually, neighborhoods or apartments work with law enforcement to organize a watch group and hold regular meetings. They also distribute posters and offer free safety presentations.

A growing number of communities are using smartphone apps that make it easier for residents to collaborate on security and crime prevention. There are several options available, including neighborhood-focused social networks such as Nextdoor, Ring and Citizen and specialized security apps like those offered by home security companies or property management.

These apps offer real-time crime and safety alerts to entire blocks, neighborhoods or even whole communities. They often work in collaboration with home security systems and are commonly used by small communities such as HOAs, gated apartment complexes and business districts. They may be managed by property managers or security companies, or by residents themselves.

The goal of a neighborhood watch program is not to be vigilantes. Members should be alert and observant, but not try to take action themselves, such as confronting or attempting to apprehend suspects. Instead, they should be sure to report any suspicious activity to the police. They should also be willing to join in with the police by going out in pairs or more to patrol the neighborhood at certain times of day.
