Impact of Climate Change on Global Floods

Climate change is one of the most important global issues that has a significant impact on various aspects of life, including the frequency and intensity of floods. The impact can be seen across the world, with a number of areas experiencing huge losses due to increasingly severe flooding. One of the main causes of exacerbation of flooding is an increase in global temperatures which causes melting of polar ice and an increase in sea levels. According to the latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), sea level rise could reach two meters by the end of the century if greenhouse gas emissions are not reduced. Coastal areas, such as Bangladesh and Indonesia, are becoming particularly vulnerable to more frequent and severe flooding. When heavy rain occurs, the already saturated soil cannot absorb more water, which causes puddles. In many large cities, such as Jakarta and Mumbai, inadequate drainage infrastructure exacerbates this situation. Data notes that Jakarta is experiencing an increase in the frequency of flooding due to extreme rainfall, which is triggered by changes in global weather patterns. Climate change is also contributing to extreme weather phenomena, such as stronger tropical storms. This storm not only increased the amount of rainfall, but also brought strong winds that damaged infrastructure. For example, Hurricane Harvey in the United States in 2017 had a devastating impact on Houston, with more than 1,500 mm of rain in some days. Agriculture has also been impacted by increasingly frequent flooding. Floods have a direct impact in the form of damage to land and crops, as well as affecting the availability of clean water. Most farmers in flood-prone areas are forced to lose their crops, which results in increasing rates of poverty and food insecurity. This makes things worse for already marginalized communities. In addition, many countries struggling to face these new challenges are experiencing high economic costs due to flood disasters. Infrastructure repairs, land rehabilitation and social assistance for flood victims are becoming increasingly accumulating budgets. In the context of mitigation, investment in efficient drainage systems and good water management is imperative. Not only that, the social impact of flooding is also very real. Many families have lost their homes and belongings, moving to shelters that are often inadequate. Public health is also threatened due to the increased risk of post-flood water-based diseases. A polluted environment and overused resources are creating new health challenges. Finally, awareness and proactive action are essential in dealing with the impacts of flooding due to climate change. Research-based policy development and international collaboration are key to reducing the risk of flooding in the future. Every individual and community has an important role in efforts to mitigate climate change and adapt to face its consequences.
